Rain forces BA no decision

The rain came sooner than expected Thursday, washing out many late-afternoon athletic endeavors including the Bulloch Academy-Brentwood baseball tilt at Gator Alley.

The visiting Eagles had a 10-2 lead on the Gators going into the bottom of the fourth inning when the contest was stopped for a lightning delay at 5:12 p.m.

During the delay, the rain slowly crept into the area. With heavier downpours on the way, both head coaches agreed to halt the game at 5:40 p.m., declare it a no-contest and head for home. It turned out the decision was the correct call as the bottom dropped out minutes later. There will be no makeup game between the non-region opponents.

Brentwood (12-1) took a 2-0 lead in the opening inning. Kevin McCrary and Dylan Kelly had back-to-back doubles off BA starter Davis Howell. But the junior wasn’t fazed by the hits and got the next three batters to ground out.

Bulloch (4-4) rallied in the bottom of the inning. Senior Taylor Burke doubled and scored on Win Lee’s triple to left. Senior Matthew Sapp lofted a sacrifice fly to left to plate the junior and knot the score.

Both squads went silently in the second.

In the third, Brentwood hits and BA errors led to a four-run swing as the Eagles took a 6-2 lead off Howell. Freshman Bailey Smith came on in relief.

The Eagles jumped on Smith in the top of the fourth, scoring four more runs for a 10-2 margin. Junior Walker Blitch came on in relief to extinguish the fire. Burke caught the third out in center field just as the lightning detector went off.

Six of Bulloch’s final nine games are against Region 2-AA foes. First up are the Spartans of Edmund Burke Academy. The Gators travel to Waynesboro today for the 4 p.m. battle.

“They are 4-0 in the region and we are 3-1,” said Evans. “I’m sure we’ll see their number one pitcher because they’ll get our number one (Burke).”
