The Statesboro Lady Blue Devils improved to 3-0 with a 50-35 win over McIntosh County Academy Tuesday on Day Two of the Ladies Night Out Tournament at SHS.
Monnette Bennett had 18 points, 12 boards and six assists in the win. Gwen Jones was a force in the paint with 13 points of her own.
In earlier action, Screven County (0-1) lost 52-37 at the hands of Camden County. Jade Dixon led the Lady Wildcats with 19.
Jenkins County picked up its first win of the season with a 61-53 win over Lincoln County. Tashe McClair had 17 to lead JCHS (1-1).
South Effingham tops Lady Tigers
South Effingham rode a 9-3 third quarter to pull away from Claxton 44-37 Tuesday in girls basketball in Guyton.
Lacreasha Brewton scored 20 points on six 3s for CHS (0-1), which trailed 19-16 at halftime.
Whitney Jones led SEHS (1-0) with 13 points.
The Lady Tigers will return home Tuesday to entertain Metter.
Portal JV beats SEB JV
The Portal boys junior varsity basketball team defeated the Southeast Bulloch JV 50-41 on Tuesday.
Jamie Hagins and Jaron Jones had 11 points each for PHS. Devin Leach added nine.
Isiah Jackson led SEB with 15.
Eagle hoops signs five
Georgia Southern head coach Jeff Price has announced the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2008-09 season.
Joining the team are Nate Blackburn, Tyrone Curnell, Jesse Joseph, Antonio Hanson and Colby Wohlleb.
Blackburn is currently a senior at Graham High School in Graham, N.C. While at Western Alamance High School he averaged 15.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in 2006-07 and was an All-Triad 3-A Conference selection.
Curnell, currently attending Seminole Community College in Sanford, Fla., is averaging 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Raiders. While at West Orange High School, he was a three-time first team all-conference performer, was named to the all-state second team and posted averages of 17 points and eight rebounds per contest. Curnell played the 2006-07 season at Jacksonville University and in 26 games averaged 9.2 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 54.4 percent from the floor. His 39 steals were second best on the team.
Joseph is recording 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocks per game in his second season at Odessa College in Odessa, Texas. Joseph, who attended Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Opa Locka, Fla., was named fourth team all-state and second team all-conference.
Hanson currently averages 16.3 points per contest at Independence Community College in Independence, Kan. The sophomore from Liberal, Kan. posted 18 points and seven rebounds per outing at Liberal High School and was a two-time first team all-state honoree and made three all-conference teams.
Wohlleb averaged 20.3 points, 11.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game for North Broward Prep last season. The 6-6 shooting guard qualified for the state’s 3-point shooting contest and recorded career highs of 33 points, 17 rebounds and 13 assists in the 2006-07 season. He now attends Boca Raton High School.
SEB Debate team results
The Southeast Bulloch High School debate team, 2007 National tournament qualifiers, traveled to what is considered one of the toughest and largest Georgia tournaments of the season on Nov. 16th and 17th.
The Carrollton Peach State Classic draws the top debate schools of all sizes from around the state. SEB coach Phil Oliver was very impressed with his yellow Jacket debaters as they made a bid once again for the National Championship. Senior Sam Strozzo was named Lincoln-Douglas Debate Champion, advancing through elimination rounds as a top seed. Hillary Luna (Sophomore), Amber Seymour (Senior), Lexi Grell (Senior), Dallas Hulsey (Senior), Aaron Groover (Senior) and Derek Cowart (Senior) all had winning records in Public Forum Debate.
Derek Cowart received third place speaker out of nearly fifty participants, and his partner, Aaron Groover, placed fifth among the strong pool.
Southeast Bulloch, perhaps the smallest and most rural school on the Georgia debate circuit, shocked and defeated many schools such as St. Pius, Grady, Pace Academy, Pope and Starr's Mill.
