Local Roundup: Portal edges Screven County, 74-68

    The visiting Portal Panthers turned a tie ball game at halftime into a nine-point cushion at the end of the third quarter, then held on to defeat Screven County on Saturday, 74-68.
    In a fast-paced affair, the potent Portal duo of Mario Farris and Fred Williams combined for 13 of their team's 23 points in the third. Both players wound up with 23 points.
    Screven County (2-2) was led by Antrjuan Albright's 22 points. Jamez Colbert had 18 and Desmond Campfield added 11.
    The Gamecocks return to action on Saturday in a game at Statesboro. Portal's next test occurs on the same day, when they host Metter.

Lady Gamecocks cruise, 51-25
    Screven County's girls basketball team cruised to a 51-25 home win on Saturday over Portal, 51-25.
    Kadedra Evans had a double-double in the winning effort and led all scorers, tallying 14 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Angela Hagan added 10 points for the undefeated Screven team (4-0).
    Bridgette Oglesby led the Lady Panthers with 12 points.
    The Lady Gamecocks travel to Statesboro on Tuesday, while Portal hosts Metter.

Westside tops SEB
    Southeast Bulloch's boys basketball team fell at Westside-Augusta (3-0) Saturday evening, 63-49.
    Tony Raymond led SEB (0-5) in scoring with 18 points; James Scott added 15.
    Westside's Jammal Crayton had a game-high 30 points from his guard position.
    SEB's next game comes on Tuesday at Bryan County.

Lady Jackets fall, 44-30
    The girls basketball team of Southeast Bulloch lost to Westside-Augusta on Saturday, 44-30.
    Brittany Carter dropped 15 points for the visiting Lady Yellow Jackets (2-4), while Ashley Clifton chipped in with six.
    Squona Walton had 22 points in the winning effort for Westside (2-1).
    SEB travels to Bryan County on Tuesday for its next game.

Claxton's girls lose to Toombs County
    Despite Lacreasha Bruton's four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, Claxton's girls basketball team fell at home to Toombs County on Saturday, 43-36.
    Bruton had five 3s in the game and finished with 15 points, making her the leading scorer for the Lady Tigers (2-1).
    India Jones and Ashley Kennedy both came within one point of double-doubles for Claxton. Jones had nine points and 13 rebounds, while Kennedy had nine points and 10 rebounds.
    Claxton's next game comes Tuesday at Vidalia.


Metter falls, 50-36
    Metter (1-1) lost to Bryan County on Saturday, 50-36.
    Karonja Knight had 13 points in the losing effort, while Geoffrey Thurman added 11.

Portal Middle wins
    Portal Middle School's boys basketball team beat ECI Middle on Saturday, 37-24. Jamie Hagans had 14 points for Portal, and Corey Walker added nine.


    Screven County boys top JV action
    The junior varsity basketball team of Screven County topped Portal on Saturday, 54-47.
    The Gamecocks' Michael Reese led all scorers with 11 points. Steven Cox and Corey Pierce added 10 points each for Screven (1-1).
    Cornelius Roberts had 10 points in the losing effort for the Panthers.
