The Statesboro girls track and field team placed fourth at the Region 3-AAAA meet Monday at Georgia Southern. Lywanna Melvin qualified for the state meet in the discus throw. Here are the finals results:
Greenbrier finished first with 135 points, followed by Glynn Academy (84), Evans (83), Statesboro (45), Brunswick (44), Ware County (37), Effingham County (22), Academy of Richmond County (22), Lakeside (19) and Wayne County (0).
Morgan VanGorder placed third in the 3200m with a time of 12:34, a school record. Kate Brunson finished sixth in the same event with a time of 12:45
Queta Davis finished fifth in the 400m with a time of 1:01.98, Kenyatta Fagan finished sixth in the 100m with a time of 13.40 and Trensherra Rogers finished fourth in the 300 Hurdles with a time of 48.77
In the 400-meter relay Statesboro’s team of Fagan, NoraA Billups, Davis, and Rogers finished sixth with a time of 51.22.
In the 1600-meter relay Statesboro’s team of Davis, VanGorder, Billups and Rogers finished fourth with a time of 4:22
BA splits with GCHS
Griffin Christian scored five runs in the top of the seventh to pull away from Bulloch Academy, forcing a Game Three with a 12-3 win Tuesday in the first round of the GISA Class AA state playoffs.
Win Lee took the loss in relief, pitching 5 2/3 innings and striking out three. Matt Simons went 2-for-3 with all three RBI and hit two RBI.
Matthew Sapp’s grand slam and Michael Deloach’s solo shot propelled the Gators to a sixth run fifth inning and a 14-3 win in Game One.
Taylor Burke pitched seven innings for the win, striking out six. Burke was also 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Deloach added a three-run shot in the seventh for the visiting Gators and Simons added a solo blast in the sixth.
The two teams meet again today at 2 p.m. with the right to face Randoplh Southern or Windsor on Monday. The game will be broadcast lve on 850 AM at 1:50 p.m.
Claxton moves on
The Claxton boys tennis team picked up a 4-1 win over Johnson County Tuesday at Metter, advancing to the secod round of the GHSA Class A state tennis tournament.
The Tigers got wins from Justin Stewart (6-1, 6-1) and Thomas Thigpen (6-0, 6-1) in singles play. Maclyn Edwards and Brett Roberts won their doubles match 6-2, 6-4. Shoheb Punjani and Robert Stallings won their doubles match 6-2, 6-2.
Claxton will be traveling to Columbus, Ga., to face Brookstone, the No. 1 seed from Region 4-A next week.
SEB boys knocked out
Southeast Bulloch was the victim of a late rally in Tuesday’s first round match of the GHSA Class AA state tournament, losing 3-2 to Appling County.
Toby Sanders (4-6, 6-2, 6-0) and Jon Martin (7-5, 6-2) won in singles play, but the Jackets (12-8) then dropped both doubles matches.
Aaron Groover led 5-1 in the second game of his match at No. 3 singles, but eventually fell 7-5 and 6-0 after winning the first game 6-4.
Appling advances to face the winner of Bleckley County/Berrien.
Lady Tigers win Region golf tournament
The Metter girls golf team won the Region 3-AA golf tournament at Willow Lake golf course in Metter on Tuesday.
The Lady Tigers hot a 184, beating out Laney (198) and Southeast Bulloch (239). Tess Fordham was the match’s low medalist, shooting a 75. Samantha McBride led SEB with a 114.
The Southeast Bulloch boys finished third, shooting a 367. Westside won the event with a 325 and Jefferson County finished second with a 328.
Jefferson’s Matthew Russell shot a 74 to be the low medalist. Mike Waters led the Jackets with an 84.
The top two teams fromthe Region advance to the state match.
Calvary downs PHS
Portal struggled offensively Tuesday night, falling to Calvary Day 5-2 in Savannah in baseball action.
The Panthers (11-11, 7-4) will travel to Screven County on Thursday before hosting Emanuel County Institute on Friday for Region 3-A’s No. 2 seed.

FLORENCE, S.C. — The Georgia Southern golf team finished in second place at the Southern Conference Championship, Tuesday afternoon, at the par-72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina.
The Eagles finished the day shooting a 5-over 293, the third lowest score of the day, and finished the tournament 9-over 873.
No. 38 Chattanooga came out on top, winning its first SoCon championship since 1987, nine strokes ahead of the next competitor finishing at even-par 864. Winning the individual title was J.D. Bass of UNC Greensboro, tying a tournament low 68 on the day and finishing 3-under 213.
Three individual Eagles finished in the top ten at the conclusion of the tournament. Junior Drew Lethem shot a 73 in the third round and paced the Georgia Southern squad with a final score of 1-over 217. Lethem was named to the SoCon All-Tournament team for his top-five performance.
Senior Bryan Jones was named to the SoCon All-Conference team, his second such honor during his collegiate career. Jones shot the team’s lowest score on the day, an even-par 72, and finished the tournament tied for eighth place along with sophomore teammate Jordan Johnstun, both carding a total 2-over 218.
Sophomore Ryan LeFevre finished the tournament tied for 23rd, shooting an 8-over 224. Junior Chris Smith shot a birdie on the second hole and finished tied for 28th carding a total 9-over 225.
The Eagles will have a three-week break before heading to Greensboro, Ga. for the Linger Longer Invitational at Reynolds Plantation, May 13-14.
Four Panthers invited to Junior Nationals
Portal’s Jaleisia Coleman, Sacona Sheffield, Bridgett Oglesby and Kanesha Eason have been selected to participate in the USA Junior Nationals All-State High School Basketball competition, Sunday, May 6 at Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
The USA Junior Nationals is considered the top amateur high school basketball competition in the nation. The competition provides an entry level to international competition and for high school level athletes seeking college basketball scholarship opportunities.

The Georgia Southern women’s soccer program has announced its 2007 schedule, highlighted by first-time opponents, a pair of games at the Samford Tournament, and a tough Southern Conference calendar.
The Eagles will start off the season with a couple of exhibition matches at Georgia College & State (Aug. 17) and Charleston Southern (Aug. 25), both on the road.
Then the Eagles begin their regular season competition, heading to Birmingham, Ala. for a tournament hosted by Samford. Georgia Southern will first match up with Atlantic Sun foe Kennesaw State (Aug. 31). Then the Eagles take a day off before clashing with Samford of the Ohio Valley Conference (Sep. 2)
The Eagles will have one more road match against Georgia State (Sep. 9) before returning home to Statesboro for a three-game homestand versus Mercer, SoCon foe The Citadel, and Marshall (Sep. 14, 19, 21).
Georgia Southern will then hit the road to match up for the first time with High Point (Sep. 23), and then with a familiar foe at Winthrop (Sep. 28), marking the final non-conference opponents on the calendar.
Next on the schedule, the Eagles will host Chattanooga (Sep. 30), and then face a tough three-game stretch of competition at Charleston (Oct. 4), at defending regular season and tournament champion UNC Greensboro (Oct. 7), and then back in Statesboro versus Furman (Oct. 11).
GSU will then enter the second half of the conference schedule, trading off road and home games starting at Elon (Oct. 14), then Western Carolina at home (Oct. 19), Appalachian State at Boone, N.C. (Oct. 21), back home versus Wofford on Eagle Field (Oct. 25), and then a week later finishing off the regular season at Davidson (Nov. 1).
The 2007 SoCon tournament first round will be played Nov. 4, followed by the semifinal and final rounds at Davidson, N.C. (Nov. 4 and 9).
