SoCon names 175 Eagles to academic honor roll

SPARTANBURG, S.C. —The Southern Conference honored 175 Georgia Southern student-athletes for the 2012-13 season as the conference announced its academic honor roll.
A SoCon high 19 Eagles posted a perfect 4.0 grade point average, and 89 earned the Commissioner’s Medal, awarded annually to
student-athletes who attain a GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout the year.
The football team had 27 selections to the honor roll, while the swimming and diving team had 26 and the women’s soccer squad posted 25. Four members of the swimming and diving team had 4.0 grade point averages, while the softball, volleyball and baseball teams each had three student-athletes with perfect GPAs.
The honor roll topped 2,000 student-athletes for the first time in conference history, surpassing the record 1,985 who were honored in 2010-11. The 25-year-old award originated in 1988-89, when SoCon athletic directors established the honor roll prior as a way to recognize the league’s outstanding student-athletes. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports at member institutions and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher while passing at least 24 hours in two semesters of classes or its equivalent for other academic calendars. Of those more than 2,000 student-athletes on the list, 895 earned the Commissioner’s Medal.
The honor roll includes all 19 SoCon-sponsored sports as well as the non-sponsored sports of field hockey, lacrosse, swimming and diving, equestrian, rifle and sailing. League schools who sponsor swimming are members of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association.
