Elon will officially join the Colonial Athletic Association and say goodbye to the Southern Conference, according to a report from the Wilmington Star-News.

            The report stated that Elon is holding a press conference set for 2 p.m., on Thursday. The report did not confirm if the Phoenix would leave the SoCon in 2014 or 2015.

            Elon left the Big South Conference to join the SoCon in 2003. The move would make Elon the fifth school to leave the Southern Conference in recent months. Georgia Southern and Appalachian State will join the Sun Belt in 2014. College of Charleston has already announced a move to the CAA, and Davidson, the SoCon’s premier basketball program, recently announced a move to the Atlantic 10.

            Rumored replacements for the departing SoCon programs include Mercer -- which hosted SoCon officials on Friday according to reports from the Macon Telegraph – Kennesaw State, Virginia Military Institute, East Tennessee State and UNC Asheville.
