Hudson Presume has seen a little bit of everything over the last four-plus years of Georgia Southern football.
He’s seen four different starting quarterbacks since his redshirted year in 2007, he's seen losses he’d like to forget, and he saw the unforgettable playoff run of 2010 which included a victory over No. 1-ranked Appalachian State and a six-game winning streak that resulted a trip to the Football Championship Subdivision semifinals.
Unfortunately, in almost a culmination of what had been an injury-plagued career, Presume suffered a torn meniscus and missed the final 12 games of the 2010 season.
“There was a time when I was depressed, I’m not going to lie, but we’re just a brotherhood,” said the GSU cornerback, now a senior. “Guys always said, ‘Keep your head up. You never know what’s going to happen tomorrow. Keep working hard.’ Laron [Scott], Brent [Russell], Jaybo [Shaw], Darreion [Robinson], J.J. [Wilcox], all those guys gave me the confidence to come back. You’ve got to be hungry.”
The recovery hasn’t been easy, but Presume now finds himself at the top of the cornerback depth chart with Scott and Lavelle Westbrooks, who has practiced both at CB and safety.
When Presume showed up for voluntary workouts at the start of the summer, he was at 100 percent for the first time in almost a year.
“The first thing he did for himself was get healthy,” said cornerbacks coach Orlando Mitjans. “Body, mind and soul, he got healthy. He is probably in the best shape I’ve ever seen him in.”
Presume wasn’t on the field for most of the 2010 season, but he did everything he could to contribute.
“It was fine being a cheerleader for the team,” he said. “We were winning, and I had no problem being on the scout team. That’s being a team player. On a football team, everybody has a role. That was my role.”
Last season wasn’t Presume’s only injury. In a scary moment after a hit against Appalachian State on October 24, 2009, in Boone, N.C., Presume stayed down. He was rushed to the hospital after a hit to the spine and feared the worst. Fortunately, after the tests came back negative, the worst Presume suffered was a concussion.
“I thank God and my teammates for rallying around me,” Presume said, “that I was able to come back and play with my team.”
Now that he and Scott are the Eagles’ two most experienced cornerbacks, whether or not Presume is going to be a starter is not the most important thing on his list. He and Scott have been instructing the underclassmen and have taken on leadership roles.
“We’re not going to be here forever in college football,” Presume said. “It’s our job to pass it down to our teammates.”
The Eagles will play their first scrimmage of fall camp this morning at 9:45 a.m. at Beautiful Eagle Creek.
