GREENVILLE, S.C. — David Whitehead pitched a complete game as No. 3 seed Elon eliminated No. 7 seed The Citadel, 7-3, in game nine of the 2012 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament on Friday at Fluor Field.
Elon advanced to today's tournament semifinal and will need two wins against No. 6 seed Georgia Southern to reach Sunday’s 2 p.m. single-elimination championship game.
GSU (32-26) and Elon (33-25) will play at 10 a.m. today. An Elon victory would force a 5 p.m. game against GSU, which needs one win to advance to Sunday's championship game. GSU beat Elon, 19-2, on Wednesday.
The Citadel (25-33) was eliminated from the tournament with its second loss.
Whitehead (5-3) scattered eight hits and gave up three runs while tying a season high with six strikeouts. The sophomore did not walk a batter while tossing his first career complete game.
Elon put the game out of reach with three runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings, punctuated by a pair of two-run home runs.
