Cougars walk off, take series

    CHARLESTON, S.C. —Morgan Phillips hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to hand the College of Charleston Cougars a 3-2 win and a series victory over the Georgia Southern Eagles.
    Sam Howard received a no decision after allowing two runs over five innings. Ryan West matched Howard with a two-run five inning performance of his own.
    Both bullpens combined to throw four scoreless innings each before College of Charleston (30-24,17-11 Southern Conference) scored in the bottom of the ninth inning.
    Georgia Southern's (25-29, 13-16 SoCon) Chris Myers (1-2) took the loss after loading the bases in the ninth inning and allowing the sacrifice fly. Myers tossed 1.2 innings and allowed one hit and two walks.
    Blake Ross (2-1) picked up the win after throwing four scoreless innings. Ross allowed just two hits and two walks to earn his second victory of the season.
    The Cougars out hit the Eagles 10-7 and were led by Blake Butler and Cody Martin. Both Butler and Martin had two hits each. Butler also scored two runs, while Martin drove in a run. Tyler Avera and Stryker Brown led GSU with two hits each.
    College of Charleston got the scoring started in the second inning with a two-out double by Cody Martin.
    Martin drove in Ben Boykin, who had been hit with a pitch with two outs, from first base.
    The Cougars added to their lead with a run in the third inning. Brandon Murray singled to right field to plate a lead off walk in Butler. Sam Howard left Murray stranded at first base after recording a pair of strikeouts to end the frame.
    The Eagles tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run fifth inning. Brown plated a one-out double from T.D. Davis with a single to left field. Brown was thrown out for the second out of the inning trying to stretch the single into a double. Arthur Owens kept the inning alive with a base hit to right and later scored on an error by the shortstop.
    After neither side could record a run for three innings, Butler reached base to lead off the ninth inning on an error.
    A hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases with one out before Phillips hit a deep fly ball to right center field.
    The series concludes today with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
    Josh Stevenson will take the mound for the Eagles. The Cougars will counter with Matt Pegler.
NOTES: Georgia Southern and the College of Charleston will meet for the final time in the regular season as conference members. ... The Cougars are set to leave the SoCon after this season for the CAA. ... Ryan West faced the minimum over the first 4.1 innings.
