The last two years have been tough for the Metter Tigers. Winless since the move to GHSA Class AA, MHS has had to find a way to keep its spirits up.
Luckily for the Tigers, several players have stepped up to keep the squad motivated, not the least of whom — quarterback Blake Williams.
Metter came as close to a Region 3-AA victory as they have been in a while in a 14-13 loss to Southeast Bulloch friday, and Williams kept his team in the game. All of the team’s leaders have helped out during the difficult stretch.
“I feel like we have a lot of leaders,” said Williams. “The offensive line played great. We just came up a little short.”
The quarterback passed for 305 yards and both of the teams touchdowns while adding 54 yards on the ground.
“We don’t believe in boosting individuals, because if he didn’t have time to throw the ball and he didn’t have guys making plays he wouldn’t have gotten the yardage,” said MHS coach Clay Hill. “We are proud of (Williams). He’s been in a tough situation, because we are under-manned and out-sized a lot.”
Girls: McKee steps up for Devils
Susanna McKee is been running since she was 10 years old.
This season she started a “new” career at Statesboro, coping with a new team, larger fields of runners and tougher competition.
The Bulloch Academy transfer has adjusted well however, finishing first or second out of her SHS teammates in every race she’s competed in this fall.
“I like (being at Statesboro), but it’s been a lot harder,” said McKee, a junior. “There’s more runners and the times are a lot faster.’
McKee said her father got her involved in running at a young age, and she enjoys thee competition and relaxing nature of the sport. McKee said that she and the rest of the Lady Devils will need to continue to practice hard and keep a good attitude for Saturday’s GHSA Class AAAA state meet in Carrollton, Ga.
“Susanna has just been a delight to coach,” said SHS coahc Helen Welle-Graf. “She’s always open for suggestions and she’s just a natural runner. She has a wonderful, sweet disposition and I would love to have 10 more just like her.”
