AUBURN, ALA. – Georgia Southern Baseball came up short in the season opener at No. 15 Auburn. The Eagles scored the game's first run, but dropped the 11-2 decision after conceding five runs in the first frame. Georgia Southern, however, out-hit the Tigers 9-8 in the game. The Eagles will turn to freshman pitcher Braden Hays on Saturday for game two of the series with first pitch set for 2 p.m. (CT) / 3 p.m. (ET).
Top 1st | GS 1 - AUB 0 | The Eagles cashed in an Auburn fielding error in the first inning for a run. Austin Thompson reached on a ball to third and stole second base. Jason Swan knocked in the season's first run with the RBI single through the right side.
Bot 1st | GS 1 - AUB 5 | Auburn sent 10 batters to the plate in the opening frame and scored five off four hits and three hit batters.
Top 2nd | GS 2 - AUB 5 | Mason McWhorter opened the second with a leadoff single. Two more hits loaded the bases with Steven Curry at the plate. The leadoff hitter grounded to third for an RBI fielder's choice.
Bot 3rd | GS 2 - AUB 6 | The Tigers got a leadoff triple from Ryan Bliss, he came home on liner to third.
Bot 4th | GS 2 - AUB 7 | A pair of walks put two runners on and ended Seth Shuman's outing. The Tigers got the run on a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left. The runner on first rounded second and was doubled off at first for the final out of the inning after the run scored.
Bot 7th | GS 2 - AUB 8 | Auburn got its first hit off relief pitcher Joe Nahas to open the seventh inning. Two ground balls and a stolen base brought the run in to score and make it an 8-2 lead.
Bot 8th | GS 2 - AUB 11 | A walk and an error opened the door for a crooked Auburn number in the eighth inning. Rankin Woley drove in a pair of runs with a double to left. The Tigers went on to score three in the frame to post the 11-2 margin.
- Junior Seth Shuman got the start and allowed seven runs off five hits. He struck out four to take the loss to fall to 0-1 on the young season.
- Christian Avant had a 2-for-3 game at the foot of the Eagle lineup, lacing singles in the second and fifth innings.
- For the second straight season, Noah Searcy got a hit from a pinch hit opportunity on opening day. In 2018 the then-freshman hit a pinch hit home run at Georgia. This year, Searcy got a pinch hit double in the sixth inning.
- Relief pitcher Joe Nahas had an outstanding debut outing for the Eagles, working four innings and allowing one run off one hit with three strikeouts.
