STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mrs. Jean Roy Lanier, age 97, died Friday, January 11, 2019, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice inpatient facility in Statesboro.
    Jean was born in Charleston, West Virginia, and as a small child she moved to Ohio and later to Lynchburg, Virginia. She graduated from E.C. Glass High School. Upon her graduation, Jean moved to Newport News, Virginia, where she met Rupert Lanier, who was stationed there for his military service. The two married in 1946 and made their home in Miami, Florida.
    In 1954, they returned to Rupert’s home of Bulloch County, where they raised their family and resided until their death.
    Jean was a homemaker and assisted her husband in his career as he introduced Georgia funeral homes to Batesville Casket Company. Rupert represented this company until his death in 1981.
    Following Rupert’s death, Jean began working at Statesboro First Baptist Church, where she served as the Senior Adult director from 1991 until her retirement in 2007.
    She was a longtime member of the Statesboro First Baptist Church, where she was active in Sunday school and the Senior Adult Choir. Jean was also a charter member of the Bulloch County Young at Heart Club. She was bestowed the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Award.
    She has been a resident of Brown’s Health and Rehabilitation in Statesboro for the past several years.
    Jean was preceded in death by her husband and a great-grandson, Tucker Lanier.
    Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Donna Lanier of Portal and Bob and Terri Lanier of Statesboro; four grandchildren, Todd Lanier (Jenny) of Sylvania, Clay Lanier (Pattie Pittman) of Claxton, Robin Burks (Jay) of Warner Robins and Carrie Haney (Brett) of Salt Lake City, Utah; and three great-grandchildren, Makenzie Wadley and Hatcher Wadley, both of Warner Robins; and Ian Haney of Salt Lake City, Utah.
    The family will receive visitors on Monday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
    The funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Dr. H. William Perry and Dr. John Waters officiating. Interment will be in Eastside Cemetery in Statesboro.
    Pallbearers will be Clay Lanier, Chris Wadley, Frank Parker, Danny Hagan, Johnny Owens and George Black.
    The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Statesboro First Baptist Church Nursing Program, 108 North Main Street, Statesboro, GA 30458; or Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.
