STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mr. James Edward Sowell, age 83, died on Tuesday, February 12th, 2019, at Ogeechee Area Hospice inpatient facility.
Mr. Sowell was born in Hopkinsville, Ky., on March 3rd, 1935, to Mr. James and Mrs. Lucille Sowell. He served in the Army during the Korean War as a radio and communications security repairer.
He met his wife, Patricia, while in Fredericksburg, Va., and they later moved to Statesboro, Ga., in 1984 when he accepted a job with Georgia Southern University in their Energy Management Department.
He was a lifelong aviator who enjoyed flying and restoring vintage aircrafts.
Mr. Sowell was a member of the Civil Air Patrol in Virginia, a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, life member of EAA Chapter 3, member of EAA Chapter 489 in Statesboro and a 24-year volunteer at Sun & Fun Fly-In Expo in Lakeland, Fla., where he was a member of the smoke oil team.
He was an active member of the Bulloch County Horseman’s Association, enjoying going on trail rides and camping, and also enjoyed going to bluegrass festivals.
He was also known to have a great sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Patricia Sowell of Statesboro, Ga.; his two sons, Tim Sowell of California and David and Tracy Holt Sowell of Statesboro; his daughter-in-law’s father and good friend, Clifford Holt; cousins, Howard and April Rushing; as well as many extended family members, neighbors and friends.
The family will receive visitors on Saturday from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral home in Statesboro.
The funeral will be held following visitation at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Elder Howard Rushing officiating. Interment will follow in Eastside Cemetery.
The family requests that any memorial contribution be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.
