PORTAL, Ga. -- Minister Joyce Jones Williams, age 72, passed into rest Thursday, February 7, 2019, at her residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice.
The Bulloch County native was the daughter of the late Thomas Luther Jones and Bethenia Mewborn “Lady” Jones. She received her childhood education in the Bulloch County School System and was retired from the Bulloch County Board of Education as a school bus driver.
Minister Williams was a faithful and devoted charter member of the Pine Grove Holiness Church and was ordained as minister in 1972 under the guidance of the late Elder John Harden.
Minister Williams was a member of the Holy Union, choir reunion and multiple other religious organizations through the southeastern region. She served as a youth choir director and trained many ministers and deacons.
As a community leader, she held many honorary titles such as, “Sister Church" and "Mayor of Haginsville".
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Willie “Tiny” Williams; a daughter, Lavonzie “Nusie” Williams; two brothers, Thomas “Sonny” Jones and John Hubert Jones.
She leaves to cherish her in loving memory: children, Willie “Skeet” Williams, Tendai (Jan) Haggins, Sara Williams, Linda (Sherrod) Harrington, Sharon Williams and Patricia (Randy) Hagins, all of Portal, Ga.; Matthew (Elizabeth) Williams, Lake Forest, Washington; and Shirlyn Ellison, Statesboro, Ga.; sisters, Alma (Roosevelt) Hagins and Eliza “Dooly” Hagins, both of Portal, Ga.; and Nancy “Pearl” Williams, El Paso, Texas; two brothers, Bill Jones and George “Pete” (Cynthia) Jones, Portal, Ga.; three sisters-in-law, Lucille Williams, Gertrude Huff and Joann (Larry Sr.) Huff, all of Portal, Ga.; 27 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Family visitation will be held on Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Pine Grove Holiness Church, 100 Hagan Connector, Portal, GA 30450.
The homegoing service for Minister Joyce Williams will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2019, at the Pine Grove Holiness Church with Bishop Anthony Chavers, presiding, and Elder Emory Hagins, eulogist. Burial will follow in the Parrish Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Final rites have been entrusted to Hill’s Mortuary, Inc.
