STATESBORO, Ga. -- Arthur Lee Hay Jr., age 93, who was born March 18, 1925, in Donalsonville, Georgia, to Arthur Lee Hay Sr. and Leila Hodges Hay, died Friday, July 27, 2018, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice inpatient facility in Statesboro, Ga. His sister, Clarice Hay Minter, preceded him in death and he is survived by his brother, David Benjamin Hay of Donalsonville, Ga.
    He was married to Mary Jane Kinney Hay on February 4, 1951, in Atlanta, Ga. They had three children, Brenda Hay O’Quinn (wife of the late Cecil Jackson O’Quinn Jr.) of Statesboro, Ga.; Michael Arthur Hay (wife, Jane Cathcart Hay) of Bluffton, S.C.; and Richard Byron Hay (wife, Hannah Hay) of Statesboro, Ga.
    He is also survived by four grandchildren, Amanda Hay Segers (wife of Jason Segers) and mother of his great-grandsons, Jackson and Jasper of Oakatie, S.C.; Ashley Hay Mitchell (wife of Richard L. Mitchell) of Charleston, S.C.; Cecil Jackson O’Quinn III (and Margaret Leonard) of Statesboro, Ga.; and Melissa Hay Hayes (wife of Kevin Hayes) of Charleston, S.C.
    Arthur Hay graduated from Seminole County High School May 31, 1943, in Donalsonville, Ga., and joined the Navy. He served four years during World War II.
    Upon his honorable discharge July 17, 1946, he enrolled in Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering June 11, 1951.
    Upon graduation from Georgia Tech, he took a job with Phillips Chemical Corporation in Borger, Texas. In February, he married his Atlanta sweetheart and took her back to Texas, where Brenda was born.
    In 1952, he moved to Savannah, Ga., and went to work at the Savannah district of the Corps of Engineers, where Michael and Richard were born. During the next 30 ,he worked on the designs for Clark Hill Dam, Richard B. Russell Dam and Hartwell Dam, among other projects, and retired as chief of the Civil Management Branch. Upon retirement from the Corps of Engineers, he went to work with his wife, Mary, who was owner of La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries in Savannah, Ga.
    Arthur was a member of numerous community organizations which included American Association of Mechanical Engineers, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American Legion, Gideon’s International, Savannah Yellow Jacket Club, Savannah Sports Fishing Club (Angler of the Year 2003), Tybee Light Power Squadron (past commander), Savannah Home Furnishings Association and Georgia Home Furnishings Association.
    All who knew Arthur Hay knew that he was a devout Christian who humbly served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Growing up in Donalsonville, Ga., he joined First Baptist Church of Donalsonville and was baptized there. When Arthur went to Atlanta to Georgia Tech, he joined First Baptist Church and served as president of the Training Union.
    When he moved to Borger, Texas, he moved his membership to First Baptist in Borger. When Arthur moved to Savannah in 1952, he joined Bull Street Baptist Church. A few years later, Arthur and Mary joined with other couples to establish Memorial Baptist Church on Habersham Street in Savannah. He was a charter member there and was ordained as a deacon. He became chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee at Memorial and worked selflessly to build that church, even going down on Saturday to cut the grass, clean the church and set up the nursery.
    In the early 1970s, Arthur moved his membership to First Baptist Church in Savannah in order to be with his family that were members there and served on the board of deacons and chaired the Building and Grounds Committee. In 2007, Arthur and Mary moved to Statesboro, Ga., and they placed their membership at Statesboro First Baptist Church. He became an active member of the Open Door Sunday School Class.
    Arthur was an avid outdoorsman. He was a true green thumb gardener and many folks enjoyed the produce from his garden and the flowers he grew. He loved hunting and fishing, especially salt-water fishing, and received numerous for his excellence in fishing.
    He enjoyed traveling with his wife of 67 years and they traveled to many places, including Hong Kong, China, Dominican Republic, Grand Cayman Islands and most of the states in the United States.
    Arthur was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He often delighted his family with wonderful stories of his life. He was a kind and gentle man who will be missed by all.
    The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, August 1, 2018, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
    The funeral service will be on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Statesboro First Baptist Church with Dr. John Waters officiating.
    The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
    Interment will be in Eastside Cemetery in Statesboro.
    Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Open Door Sunday School Class.
    The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Statesboro First Baptist Church, 108 North Main Street, Statesboro, Georgia 30458; or Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, Georgia 30459.
