Mother arrested; child suffers only cuts and scrapes

A woman was arrested after her 2-year-old fell out of her vehicle Sunday.Victorina Figueroa Saucedo, 35, of Old River Road, was charged with driving while unlicensed, seat belt violation, reckless conduct, according to Statesboro police reports.Saucedo was driving around 6:30 p.m. Sunday when she made a right turn West Main Street and Stockyard Road, Statesboro Public Safety Director Wendell Turner said Tuesday.As she did so, the car’s passenger door opened and the unsecured child safety seat, in which the child was seated but not buckled, fell out, he said.“Thankfully, the child received only scrapes and scratches from the incident and was transported to the hospital by EMS for treatment after police arrived at the scene,” he said.While the child was in the car seat, “the seat was not secured to the backseat of the vehicle and the child was not buckled into the child safety seat,” Turner said. “Witnesses stated that as the vehicle made a right turn, the rear passenger door swung open allowing the child and seat to fall out of the moving vehicle.”Securing a child into a properly attached safety seat is important, he said. “The Statesboro Police Department would like to strongly encourage all citizens to make sure that any child they transport is properly secured in a child safety seat or a seat belt.”Literature on child safety seat laws and practices is available free at the police department.Holli Deal Bragg may be reached at (912) 489-9414.
