A Swainsboro man faces rape charges stemming from a November 2017 incident where he claimed to be a driver for Uber, according to a release from Bulloch County Sheriff Noel Brown.
Matthew James Chalkley of Richard Street in Swainsboro was arrested Monday following a six-month investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to East Georgia Regional Medical Center in November 2017 where a 19-year-old woman reported a sexual assault. The victim said a man offered to provide a ride home to a friend and her and he said he was an “Uber driver,” according to the release.
The victim said the man sexually assaulted her at his residence. During the investigation, a suspect was identified as Chalkley, 25, who listed a Hampstead Drive address in Statesboro at that time.
In the release, Sheriff Brown said the investigation continued through the interviewing of witnesses, the suspect and by obtaining and submitting evidence to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab. The case then was submitted to the District Attorney’s Office and based on the totality of the evidence collected and the interviews conducted, Brown said a warrant for Chalkley’s arrest was issued.
He turned himself in to the Sheriff’s Office and is charged with one count of rape. Chalkley is being held at the Bulloch County Jail without bond.
