The Averitt Center for the Arts is looking for a few good men and women.
    A body that oversees management of the Averitt Center and its various programs, the Statesboro Arts Council, is currently accepting applications to fill vacancies on its Board of Directors, said Tim Chapman, the center’s executive director.
    As many as five seats could be available for persons wanting to donate their time to support local arts programs.
    “(The Statesboro Arts Council) has three board members that have completed their final term and will be rotating off the board,” said Theresa Novotny, past president of the Council. “We have two other members, who may or may not be rejoining us for another term. So we are selecting at least three new members, with a possibility of five.”
    Applications are available on the Averitt Center website (www.averittcenterforthearts.org), by selecting the “About Us” tab and choosing “Board of Directors.”
    The application, along with a brief resume, will be accepted through Feb. 1.
    Applications are reviewed by an Arts Council committee, which will select the board’s newest members. New terms begin in July.
    “We will look at the makeup of the board and review the backgrounds and strengths of the individuals applying; we will try to find applicants who can fill the voids left by the members who are leaving us,” Novotny said.
    Terms of office for incoming members are set at a minimum of three years.
    Novotny said people are encouraged to apply regardless of their professional background. However, applicants must have “a love for the Averitt Center and a passion for the arts,” she said.
    The 12-member Statesboro Arts Council meets monthly and overseas all aspects of managing the Averitt Center.
    “We set the policy for the Averitt Center, oversee committees that select the yearly programs, approve the budget each year and assist in fundraising,” Novotny said. “We manage several different committees. We have a finance committee, which oversees the budget; we have an education committee, which oversees youth programs and workshops; we have a visual arts committee, to select the six art exhibitions in our main gallery; and we have a performing arts committee that selects the various shows we bring in — among others.”
