Snow or not to snow? That's the question as to whether Statesboro will see any of the white stuff the day after Christmas.

National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Alsheimer says there is a good chance of snow flurries Sunday, but Savannah meteorologist Pat Prokop said on Internet social network site Facebook, "I wouldn't hold my breath for this one."

Alsheimer said temperatures could dip low enough Sunday to change cold rain into snow, but "I don't think you're going to be able to build a snowman." Flurries are the most to be expected, he said, but Prokop doesn't believe the temperatures will drop low enough to snow.

On Facebook Thursday, he posted "After 72 degrees today, it will be cooler tomorrow and Friday but sunny. A rain system will pass through the region Saturday night and Sunday morning ... becoming breezy and cold early next week. Mild temperatures return by end of next week."

Alsheimer said rainfall likely won't be heavy; probably less than a half inch. But temperatures could fall to mid 30's or below Sunday, making snow flurries a possibility, he said.

Winds will likely follow the system, coming around Sunday afternoon and night, he said.

The storm system moving across the country is expected to dump snow over the northern portion of the state, according to Associated Press reports.

National Weather Service forecaster Shirley Lamback said precipitation is expected to move into the state Friday night that could come as a wintry mix of rain and snow, especially in the mountains, and is likely to produce slick spots. Temperatures are expected to be in the lower 30s.

By Saturday morning, she said metro Atlanta could be covered with a rain and snow mix. Some flurries are expected Sunday morning, with temperatures expected to get above freezing during the day, she said."If you can be where you want to be by Friday night, that would be the best thing," she said.

With temperatures dropping to the mid-20s Saturday night, Lamback said there could be some accumulation. Reports from weatherunderground.com warned temperatures could drop to the lower 20's Sunday night.

Mild temperatures return by end of next week," Prokop said.
