A man caught on video using an ax to break into a convenience store early Friday morning later returned to the scene wearing the same clothes, which helped deputies identify him as a suspect, the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies assisting an investigator at the scene "noted a male subject in the area wearing clothing identical to the suspect in the (store surveillance) video," Sheriff Lynn Anderson said.
The suspect was identified as Christopher Lavon Evans, 23, of Gus Denmark Road.
Deputies responded to an alarm around 2:53 a.m. Friday at On the Go Food Mart on Georgia Highway 67 and found the front door "had been shattered, and cigarettes and alcohol had been taken from the store," Anderson said. "Surveillance video revealed a male using an ax to shatter the door before removing the items."
Investigator John Quattlebaum was processing the scene for evidence when deputies noticed that Evans matched the suspect on video, Anderson said.
After obtaining consent to search of the residence where Evans was staying the night, deputies found items stolen from the convenience store, Anderson said.
Evans was charged with burglary and second-degree criminal damage to property before being taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where he remained without bond Friday as he awaited further court hearings, according to jail records.
