Statesboro Police arrested a man twice for one crime this week, releasing the offender after the initial arrest for aggravated assault because the victim was uncooperative.
But after the victim, who was stabbed in the side with a pocket knife, returned to the police department the next day and apologized, the offender turned himself in, said Statesboro Police Det. Kelphie Lundy.
A man called police Tuesday, stating he had been stabbed in the side at to Harvey’s on Fair Road by Mitchell Clayton, 36, Eagle Inn. Lundy said there is an ongoing dispute between the two men over the victim dating Clayton’s ex-wife.
“There is some animosity,” he said. “They have been throwing threats for the longest.”
The victim was entering the grocery store when Clayton approached him and stabbed him with a pocket knife, Lundy said.
Clayton was located a short time afterward at JaMan Carribean Cafe, according to police incident reports. But later, he was released and charges were dropped, the reports stated.
Lundy said that was because the victim was unruly and uncooperative and refused to discuss the incident, demanding a lawyer.
However, the victim returned to the police department Wednesday, apologetic and cooperative, he said.
When Lundy contacted Clayton again, asking him to come to the police department to discuss the issue, Clayton did so and turned himself in, he said.
Clayton was charged with aggravated assault.
The victim suffered a stab wound to the side and was treated and released at East Georgia Regional Medical Center, according to reports.
Clayton was taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where he remains without bond awaiting further court action, according to jail records.
