This year's Walk for Diabetes will have a different flair from previous years as there will be a parade included.
But it won't be just any parade. No, this parade will have a pig as grand marshal and will consist of pets dressed up in costumes.
The Walk for Diabetes is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28 beginning at 9 a.m. at Mill Creek Regional Park. Registration for the pet parade will start at 8 a.m. that morning.
Lulu's pet parade will take place along side the more traditional walk this year at Mill Creek and Penny Harris, the organizer, is excited about its prospects.
"Basically, we wanted to help raise money for the American Diabetes Association and add an element of fun to our walk," Harris said.
Harris said she came up with the idea because she is both a diabetic and a pet lover and wanted to do something to combine the two.
In addition to the pet costume contest, there will be paw painting, nail trimming and more.
Harris said volunteers from Gateway Animal Hospital will be on hand as well.
Maria Center of the American Diabetes Association said she doesn't know what kinds of turnout to expect, but hopes the pet parade will bring out people who may not have supported her cause.
"We think it's fun and a way to bring people to the effort who may enjoy animals and who want to support the ADA through their pets," Center said.
If the event goes well, Center said it could be spun off into a separate event next year to help raise money for the American Diabetes Association.
The head of the parade will be Lulu, the pig that's serving as the mascot for this year's campaign.
