Two more candidates qualified Tuesday for the May 22 special election to fill the vacant District 5 seat on Statesboro City Council.

Konrad Godfrey, 60, employed in computer services at Georgia Southern University, and Don Armel, 63, a retired GSU graphic communications professor, paid the qualifying fee and filed the required paperwork with City Clerk Sue Starling.

On his form, Godfrey wrote that he is a lifetime Statesboro resident who has lived in the district 25 years, and Armel indicated than he has been a resident of both the city and the district for 21 years, Starling said.

Derek Duke, 73, an Air Force veteran and retired airline pilot, had qualified Monday.

The half-week qualifying opportunity continues at 8 a.m. Wednesday but closes permanently at noon. Candidates qualify in the clerk’s office at City Hall. The May 22 city special election, in just District 5 and affecting only one voting precinct, coincides with the county and state primaries but will be held using a separate ballot.
