A Statesboro man was arrested Thursday afternoon after leading police on a nearly 20-minute chase through parts of rural Bulloch County.
Thurman Jermaine Bacon, 34, fled from members of the Bulloch County Drug Suppression Team in a 1998 Ford Expedition, only to be stopped and tagged with charges of obstruction, fleeing and attempting to elude, and possession of marijuana, Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson said in a news release issued Friday.
Anderson said a member of the Drug Suppression Team attempted a routine traffic stop on Nevils Groveland Road at approximately 5:30 p.m.
At that point, Bacon "failed to yield and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit continued for approximately 20 minutes throughout the Nevils area, ending when other (Bulloch County Sheriff's Office) patrol units arrived and were able to use the P.I.T. maneuver to stop the Expedition," the release says.
The P.I.T. maneuver, which stands for Precision Immobilization Technique, involves a law enforcement vehicle pulling alongside the fleeing vehicle, then steering sharply into that vehicle to force it to spin and eventually stop.
With the chase concluded, Bacon resisted deputies and was struck by a Taser while exiting his vehicle, and taken into custody, Anderson said.
Bacon was transported to the Bulloch County Jail, and is currently placed on "parole hold" with no bond set for his release, sheriff's Chief Deputy Jared Akins said.
According to the release, no individuals were injured in the pursuit, and no private property damaged.
