Police do not yet know whether the death of a man whose body was found in a Statesboro pond Sunday involves foul play.
An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday on the body of Dalen Johnnathaniel Smith, which was found shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday in a pond behind Southern Downs Apartments on Chandler Road.
"Officers of the Statesboro Police Department responded to the scene in reference to a possible deceased person in the water," said Statesboro police Maj. Rob Bryan, interim police chief. "Upon arrival, Smith was located in the pond and was pronounced deceased at the scene."
While an obituary sent to the Statesboro Herald on Tuesday from Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home states Smith's death was accidental, both Bryan and Statesboro police Detective Sgt. James Winskey said it has not yet been determined whether foul play was involved. Details of the cause and manner of death are pending autopsy results, they said.
Smith's body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Savannah for the autopsy. The case has been assigned to Detective Kevin Wadley for further investigation, Bryan said.
