Statesboro police arrested a man on outstanding warrants early Sunday morning after bouncers from a nearby club flagged down an officer to report an attempted automobile break-in.
Bennie Ray Mitchell Jr., 29, of South College Street, was taken into police custody after trying to flee when Lt. Chuck Forney detained him for questioning, Statesboro Police Maj. Scott Brunson said.
A crowd gathered in a parking lot around 3:40 a.m. Sunday after a bouncer flagged Forney down, reporting an attempted automobile break-in, he said.
Statesboro Herald surveillance video shows people walking from the area of the parking lot in front of the Platinum Lounge to an area close to South College Street, where they gathered in a crowd. Video shows Forney's vehicle parked on Proctor Street as he questions Mitchell.
Brunson said Mitchell tried to flee but was apprehended, and then a check revealed he was wanted on outstanding warrants (criminal trespass) stemming from a domestic incident in April.
Surveillance video shows many members of the crowd that gathered, around 30 people, fleeing as additional officers responded to the scene.
Brunson said there is usually a significant police presence during the time the club closes. In August, one woman was killed and another wounded during a shooting in the same parking lot.
Akeila Roschelle Martin, 32, of Statesboro, was killed when an unknown gunman fired at least four shots into the crowd outside Platinum Lounge around 2:50 a.m. Aug. 17.
No shots were fired nor was any force, including Tasers, used during the Sunday incident, Brunson said.
Mitchell was taken to the Bulloch County Jail to await bond.
