Georgia Southern University police are investigating a rape reported to have occurred Oct. 19 at a Centennial Place apartment on Georgia Avenue.

The incident is one of eight sexual assault cases reported to GS university police since September. However, some of those, although reported only this month, were said to have occurred in 2017 and 2018, according to incident reports.

The assault reported Oct. 19 is an active investigation. The victim met with police at the hospital, where she told officers she was forcibly raped by a man she met earlier that night while out with friends, reports stated.

The victim was escorted to The Teal House Sexual Assault and Child Advocacy Center,  where she was examined by a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE). Officers collected evidence, including photos.

Reports did not indicate whether the suspect was identified but stated the case is actively being investigated.

Victims of sexual assault should contact law enforcement and may also reach out to The Teal House at 209 South College St. in Statesboro, (912) 489-6060, or call the 24-hour Crisis Hotline at (888) 489-2225.
