Hundreds of ducks will descend on the lazy river at Splash in the Boro on August 21 and not only with no one try to make them leave, but people will be cheering them on.
The ducks are little rubber ducks and they'll be racing around the river as part of an annual fund raiser for the American Diabetes Association.  "Ducks for Diabetes"  is in its fourth year and has become a fun family event, said Maria Center, director of the ADA.
"It's an end of summer celebration," she said. "It's a last gasp for kids and family members before school starts and wraps up the summer. It also helps create excitement for our upcoming walk."
Ducks are available for $20 each or six ducks for $100. They're available Sea Island Bank, First Southern National Bank, Farmers and Merchants Bank, Dabbs, Hill, Hickman and Cannon and also at the Honey Bowen Building. Up to $1,000 in cash prizes and other door prizes will be awarded.
Last year's fund raiser collected between $7,000 and $8,000 towards the total of $75,000 raised.
Center said the goal for the "Ducks for Diabetes" this year is about the same as last year, though they're hoping to raise $100,000. If they do, Mark Hynko, chair of this year's fund raising campaign, will shave his head.
This year's fund raising Walk for Diabetes will be held October 6 at Mill Creek Regional Park beginning at 9 a.m. In addition to that walk, there will also be a beauty pageant and clay shoot to raise money.
