Ogeechee Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Joseph Cushner is unopposed in his bid to become Bulloch County’s next state court solicitor.
Current state court Solicitor Joey Cowart told the Statesboro Herald he will retire the position effective Dec. 31 and did not qualify for the office last week.
“I look forward to serving the citizens of Bulloch County as solicitor-general,” Cushner said. “The solicitor general is the chief prosecutor for all misdemeanor crimes and traffic offenses in Bulloch County.”
He said he follows an example of high standards in replacing Cowart.
“I hope to continue the good work that Joey Cowart has done in the office over the past sixteen years,” he said. “Being a prosecutor is more than a job to me, it is a calling.”
Cushner has worked as assistant district attorney since 2010. “As I have contemplated running for this position over the past several months, I have been overwhelmed by the support that I have received from both law enforcement and the Bar of Bulloch County,” je said.
“As solicitor general, I will seek justice for all citizens of Bulloch County. To me, justice includes being sensitive and helpful to victims of crime, being accessible to the public, ensuring that the rights of all people are upheld, and being committed to public safety. I hope to continue to make Bulloch County a safe place to live and raise a family,” he said.
Cushner is a 2003 graduate of Statesboro High School and a 2006 graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in political science. In 2010 he graduated from University of Georgia School of Law.
He is a 2012 graduate of Leadership Bulloch and was listed as one of the Statesboro Herald 20 under 40 in 2013. Married to Leslie Cushner, the couple has two daughters, Ella Hazel Cushner and Charlotte Rae Cushner. He is the son of Dr. Robert Cushner and Marie Cushner and is a lifelong resident of Bulloch County.
