Vidalia-based McDonald Construction won the bid Thursday for the construction of the second phase of the new Statesboro High School.
Bulloch County Assistant School Superintendent for Business and Finance Charles Wilson said the company submitted the low bid of $38,780,000 for construction of the school’s main building, demolition of the existing structure, building the concession stands, performing additional work on the new stadium, and some student parking on Fleming Drive.
The bid “is within budget” and McDonald Construction has done work in Bulloch County before, having built Langston Chapel Middle School and Southeast Bulloch Middle School, he said.
Bulloch County Board of Education members approved the bid in a brief meeting Thursday night at the school.
The school board is also receiving about $13 million from the state and from Special Purpose Local Option Sales Taxes, he said. The reason the school board waited on seeking bids for the second phase was so they could apply for the funding, which resulted in the project “costing less locally,” Wilson said.
The classroom and building areas should be completed within 18 months, and the auditorium and gymnasium are expected to be completed within two years, he said.
McDonald construction “has experience in building schools, have done work in Bulloch county and we’ve had good experience with them,” he said.
