A man whose body was found Thursday during a brush fire committed suicide, authorities said.
Otto James Roundtree III, 24, “died of self-immolation,” which means he set himself on fire, Bulloch County Deputy Coroner Chuck Francis said.
The actual cause of death was “smoke and soot inhalation,” he said.
Roundtree “had a known psychiatric past,” Francis said.
Roundtree’s body was discovered in the woods off South College Street around 2 p.m. Thursday when Statesboro firefighters responded to a brush fire call.
When firefighters discovered the body, they called Statesboro police. The body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Savannah for an autopsy.
Preliminary results ruled out foul play, and further tests, as well as other details gathered during the Statesboro police investigation, pointed to suicide, according to reports.
