HOMERVILLE — The state Department of Agriculture is investigating the death of more than 40 cattle on a south Georgia farm.

Department of Agriculture spokesman Arty Schronce said the department is involved in the investigation but could not provide further details.

Lanier County Sheriff Nick Norton says he received a call Sunday about cows dropping dead on family farm along the border between Lanier and Clinch counties.

The site was on the Clinch side of the county line, so it was out of Lanier County’s jurisdiction, though Sheriff Norton says he contacted additional emergency and agricultural officials and supplied backup.

Norton estimated 44 cattle died suddenly at the farm.

The sheriff says the farm was placed on quarantine shortly after the call. The cattle were buried following state specifications.

Samples were taken and two cows have been sent for testing.
