SYLVANIA — Offensive line coach Mike Ward’s shirt said it all during Thursday’s workout: Screven County is ‘humble and hungry’.
A return to the playoffs in 2006 has given the Gamecocks plenty of reason to strut their stuff. A 43-6 first-round loss to eventual state co-champion Charlton County has given them plenty of reason to work even harder over the summer and right into fall camp, which began on Wednesday.
“Losing is never positive,” said head coach Pat Collins, in his second year at SCHS. “But we’ve certainly been working hard because we felt like last year we did some good things and want to improve.”
The Gamecocks willed their way through sled drills, suicides, extra point scenarios and defensive pursuit exercises until their shadows stretched long on the dry grass.
Collins has had 90-95 kids show up for the first two days of practice. One of two things that he’s been impressed with early on this fall.
“Our numbers have been real good and I feel like our summer has helped us get into pretty good shape,” Collins said. “We want to get better in every area. Defensively we return some starters and offensively we return some starters, we just got to work on our timing and our chemistry and we’ve got to continue to work on our special teams.”
The red shirts on offense spent time working on passing drills Thursday, with senior receiver Darion Carter leading the way. On the opposite end of the practice grounds the white shirts of the defense worked on coverage and sticking to their respective assignments.
Screven will come out in fulls pads on Monday, a time many coaches feel they’ll be better able to gauge their team.
“We want to have a lot of the knowledge part out of the game so guys know where they’re going and what to do when they get there,” Collins added. “Monday we’ll find out if when the guys go to their assignments they’re willing to stick to them.”
Screven County opens the season August 31 at home against Statesboro.
