Screven shuts out Westside

Screven County entered the 2017 season expecting plenty of wins.
Those wins have rolled in, but the dominating fashion in which the Gamecocks continue to prevail is what has them ranked at No. 3 in Class AA.
Screven showed exactly why it has earned that ranking Friday as the Gamecocks travelled to Westside, Augusta and dismantled the Patriots by a score of 49-0. The blowout was impressive in its own right, but is just the latest in a string of dominiant defensive showings as Screven notched its fourth consecutive shutout — the first time since 1988 that the team has performed the feat.
On offense, the Gamecocks ran just 25 plays that went for positive yards, yet found the end zone seven times in a showing of the potency and — after the game was in hand — mercy of their many scoring threats.
Quarterback Armani Bunbury was 3-of-6 through the air and found both Tyquan Johnson and Jonathan Roberts for touchdown strikes. Screven spread the wealth on the ground, rushing 22 times for 358 yards.
Tim Hunt led the way with an even 100 yards on just four carries. The stellar yardage per carry didn’t stop there as Bunbury picked up 86 yards on four attempts, C.J. Wright went for 57 yards on three carries, E.J. Roberson toted it twice for 45 yards and Gary Hawkins picked up 47 yards on his lone carry of the night.
Westside picked up three first downs on its first drive of the night and pushed all the way to the Gamecocks’ 1-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. The Patriots didn’t record another first down the rest of the way.
With the win, Screven County improves to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in region play. The Gamecocks return to Sylvania next Friday for a homecoming tilt against Josey.
