Local Roundup: Screven sweeps tournament

    SYLVANIA — Screven County hosted Telfair and Vidalia Saturday in a three-team tennis tournament, sweeping the day.
    The Lady Gamecocks (8-2-1) defeated both visiting schools without losing a set.
    Singles winners against Vidalia were Sydnee Weaver (6-3, 6-4), Lovey Sheppard (6-2, 6-1) and Kelsey Forehand (6-2, 6-4).
    Winning doubles matches were Lauren Bazemore and Lauren Thomas (6-1, 6-1) and Evan Blackburn and Mallorie Boswell (7-5, 6-3).
    The boys (6-5 overall) defeated Vidalia 3-2. Winners were Chris Powell (3-6, 7-6 [7-1], 6-1) and doubles pairs Sawyer Newton and Joe Thomas (6-2, 6-2) and Ryan Bazemore and Daniel Weaver (forfeit).
    The Lady Gamecocks defeated Telfair 5-0 with wins from Weaver (6-0, 6-0), Sheppard (6-4, 6-3) and Forehand (6-2, 6-4).
    Doubles pairs Bazemore and Thomas (6-0, 6-0) and Blackburn and Hayley Mock (6-0, 6-1).
    The boys swept Telfair, with singles wins coming from Eli Woods (6-2, 6-3), Powell (6-3, 6-1) and Jonathan Covington (6-2, 6-3).
    Winning doubles matches were Newton and Thomas (7-5, 7-5) and Bazemore and Weaver (6-2, 6-0).
    Friday's action was cut short, with the Lady Gamecocks tied 2-2 against South Effingham. Bazemore and Thomas won 6-1, 6-1 and Blackburn and Weaver won 6-2, 6-4.
    The boys lost to SEHS 3-2. Winners were Powell (6-4, 6-2) and Bazemore and Weaver (6-2, 6-4).
    The girls match will finish when South Effingham visits Sylvania.
    Screven returns to action Monday when it hosts Effingham County.

Jackets split at SCPS
    SAVANNAH — The Southeast Bulloch junior-varsity Yellow Jackets defeated Savannah Christian 11-1 Saturday.
    Leading the way offensively was Drew Rushing, and Kegan Carter pitched a complete game for SEB.
    Southeast Bulloch dropped the varsity contest 6-4.

GSU opens SoCon play with sweep
    Georgia Southern Softball rolled to a 6-4 win in game one, but needed a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to take the game two victory, 5-4, on Saturday to open Southern Conference play. The Eagles (10-14, 2-0 SoCon) led 3-0 going into the seventh, but four Appalachian State (6-13, 0-2 SoCon) runs gave the visitors a lead with a half inning to play. A pair of Georgia Southern runs in the bottom of the seventh sealed the thrilling come-from-behind victory.
    The teams close out the three-game set today with a matinee at 1 p.m.

Lady Eagles blank Davidson
    DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Georgia Southern Women’s Tennis team (5-5, 1-2 SoCon) won the doubles point and then swept through the singles for a 7-0 victory over Davidson Saturday. The Eagles won in straight sets in all the singles matches at Knobloch Tennis Center to post their first Southern Conference win of 2011.
    The Eagles continue their weekend road trip todaywith a noon match against Appalachian State.
    Freshmen Paola Garrido and Caitlin Kitchen picked up the win at No. 1 doubles when Davidson’s Stephani Synn and Nisha Crouser were unable to finish the match. The tandem of sophomore Natalie Maffett and senior Melanie Rolle clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win over the Wildcats’ Samantha Galainena and Romina Clemente.
    Senior Ali Beavers cruised to her third-straight win at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Davidson’s Nisha Crouser. Ashley Hungerford also won her third consecutive match, defeating Elise Held in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 5 seed.
    Playing at No. 4 singles, Maffett sealed the win for the Eagles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Clemente.
    Garrido topped Davidson’s Alison Rauh in the No. 1 singles spot, taking the match 6-3, 6-3. Rolle faced Galainena at No. 3 and took the first-set win 6-2 before capturing the second set, 7-5. Alessandra Dzuba finished off the afternoon with her 7-5, 6-3 win over Katharine Dicconson in the No. 6 slot.
