Local Roundup: Screven earns ticket to state

    SWAINSBORO — The No. 2 seed Screven County Lady Gamecocks (20-3) defeated Jefferson County 53-45 Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Region 3-AA tournament to assure a spot in the GHSA Class AA state playoffs.
    Destiny Brwton led SCHS with 16 points and Casmeyona Austin added 12.
    Screven plays Dodge County in the semifinals Friday at 7 p.m. in Swainsboro.

Hyter receives SoCon honor
    Georgia Southern track's Lynndsey Hyter has been selected as one of the Southern Conference Indoor Field Co-Athletes of the Week for her performance at the Tiger Paw Invitational.
    The Dallas, Texas, native won the Long Jump event in the elite section of the Tiger Paw Invitational last weekend with a distance of 19 feet, 9.75 inches. A personal best for Hyter, she secured the third-best distance in Georgia Southern history and her mark currently leads the SoCon.
    The Eagles return to Clemson, S.C. Saturday for the Tiger Tuneup.
