Local Roundup: SCHS soccer wins first-ever state playoff game

    SYLVANIA — The No. 2 seed Screven County Lady Gamecocks won the young program's first-ever state playoff soccer game Thursday at home, dispatching No. 3 Brooks County, 3-1.
    It was the first time Screven County hosted a playoff soccer game.
    Madyson Torres started the scoring with a goal with 31 minutes, 45 seconds remaining in the first half on an assist from Gentri Becton.
    The Gamecocks tacked on two more quick goals from Rochelle Schuman and Stormee Nasworthy with under four minutes to go in the first half to take a 3-0 lead into the break.
    Brooks County broke the shutout by scoring with 2:45 remaining in the game.
    Screven will play its second-round game on May 3 against the winner between Region 2-AA champion St. Vincent's and the No. 4 seed out of Region 4-AA, Lamar County.

GSU dismisses Tavaris Williams
    Junior linebacker Tavaris Williams has been permanently dismissed from the Georgia Southern football team.
    The reason for the dismissal was not disclosed.
    Williams was recently reinstated to the team after serving a voluntary suspension during the 2010 season.

SHS holding golf fundraiser
    The 21st Annual Statesboro High School Golf Tournament will be held at Forest Heights Country Club on May 9 with a 2 p.m. Shotgun start.
    It will be a four-man scramble.  
    Forest Height members   can participate for $80. The cost is $90 for non-members.

Mini-Trotters coming to SEB
    BROOKLET — The American Mini-Trotters, a traveling basketball team with one tall player and four players under 4-feet tall, will put on an exhibition Saturday, May 7 at 6 p.m. on campus at Southeast Bulloch.
    The event is sponsored by the boys basketball team.
    Tickets can be purchased for $8 in advance or $10 at the door the night of the game.

GSU hoops banquet tickets for sale
    The Georgia Southern men's basketball team will host its 2010-11 end-of-season banquet Saturday, April 30, at the Bishop Field House starting at 6:30 p.m.
    The annual event will take a look back at the season and will be hosted by “The Voice of the Eagles” Chris Blair of the GSU Radio Network.
