Local Roundup: Samuels, Burke lead BA runners

    TWIN CITY — Bulloch Academy freshman Kyle Samuels clocked a 20:26 to win a multi-team cross-country meet on the sandy and shady trails of George L. Smith State Park Monday.
    Senior Cody Lanier was sixth (22:46) in the 35-runner race. Sophomore Chet Mason was ninth (23:25), sophomore Garrett Williams was 11th (24:04) and junior Preston Nevil-Rincon was 13th (24:54). As a team, the Gators finished second.
    In the girls’ meet, senior Ashley Burke finished in 24:14 for first place and led the BA girls to a team victory.
    Freshman Mattie Wynn Hendrix was second (24:50) in the 17-runner race. Freshman Koree Jacobs was fourth (28:12), senior Heather Jacobs was fifth (28:37) and freshman Kyra Samuels was sixth (28:44).
    In middle-school girls’ action, Brittney Potter turned in a time of 14:53 for third place in the 30-runner race. Other top Lady Gators were Nina Samuels (16:50, eighth), Ashleigh Skipper (18:48, 14th) and Ella Burke (20:28, 22nd).
    For the Gator guys, Leo Mendez crossed the line at 14:29 to take ninth among the 25 runners. Other top Gators were Brandon Jones (14:43, 10th), Jacob Skipper (16:41, 16th), Tate Johnson (17:43, 19th), and Alex Nguyen (18:11, 21st).
    In elementary girls’ action, Sophie Strickland won the 16-runner race with a time of 18:21. Other top finishers were Avery Beaubien (19:40) and Lily Jane Beecher (20:56).
    In elementary boys’ action, Ben Becker took 10th with a 19:24 in the 21-runner race.  Charlie Dodds had a 21:17. 
    Bulloch Academy varsity, middle school and elementary teams will host a multi-team meet on Sept. 22.  

Lady Gators hold on, top EBA
    WAYNESBORO — Bulloch Academy broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh inning and held on in the bottom half for a 5-2 victory over Edmund Burke Academy in GISA Region 2-AAA play Tuesday.
    With two outs, the Lady Gators (7-5 overall and 3-1 in the region) got consecutive singles from seniors Kristin Kingery, Ashley Burke and Page Spence and junior Kaleigh Sisolak to score three runs for the lead.
     Sophomore Mikay Sands pitched out of trouble in the bottom of the seventh with help from the Gator defense.         Sands gave up no earned runs, five hits and one walk while striking out five to improve to 6-1. Kayleigh Sapp took the loss for EBA. 
    The Lady Gators travel to Dublin today for a region matchup with Trinity Christian.

SHS to honor 1964 Blue Devils
    Statesboro High will honor its 1964 football team on its 50th reunion on Sept. 26-27.
    The team played all of its games away from Statesboro, as Womack Field was under construction.
    All members of the 1964 Statesboro Blue Devils football team, marching band and cheerleader squad are invited to attend.
