Local Roundup: Lady Jackets top Screven in scrimmage

    SYLVANIA — The Southeast Bulloch Lady Yellow Jackets beat Screven County 52-19 in a preseason scrimmage on the road Saturday.
    SEB's Philicia Batton led the way with 20 points and Jasmine Roberts added 17.
    Southeast Bulloch's regular season begins Friday at 6 p.m. at home against Bryan County.

WJMS wins preseason tourney
    William James Middle School won the Langston Chapel preseason tournament recently.
    The Knights defeated Savannah Christian 43-19, Ebeneezer 38-14, Burke 31-16, and Richmond Hill 41-28 in the championship game.
    The Knights travel to Southeast Bulloch on Wednesday.
     Zeddrick Stidem, Traveyon Burns, and Dra Harrison led the way for the Knights in the tournament.

Beecher earns SoCon honor
    SPARTANBURG, S.C. —Georgia Southern volleyball sophomore Alexandra Beecher has been named the Southern Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
    It’s the fifth SoCon weekly award for the Eagles this season. Junior Jamie DeRatt was named Offensive Player of the Week twice, Crysten Curry was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week Sept. 9, and Kym Coley earned Student-Athlete of the Week accolades Sept. 4.
    Georgia Southern heads to this weekend’s SoCon Tournament as the top seed. The Eagles will take on eighth-seeded Elon at 12:30 p.m., on Friday in Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C.
    The winner of the tournament gets the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
