Local Roundup: Jenkins COunty advances to semifinals

    DONALSONVILLE — The Jenkins County War Eagles beat Seminole County — the No. 1 overall seed in the GHSA Class A public school state playoffs — 76-70 on Wednesday, to advance to the Final Four.
    Jenkins (18-8) will face a tough test in Wilkinson County at Fort Valley State on Friday at 8:30 p.m.
    Wilkinson (24-2) defeated Randolph-Clay, 70-66, Wednesday in the Elite Eight.

GSU's Wolfes given SoCon honor
    Georgia Southern’s Scott Wolfes has been named the Southern Conference Golfer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
    Wolfes posted a pair of runner-up finishes to kick off the spring campaign, leading the way for the Eagles at the SunTrust Gator Invitational and the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate.
    Wolfes has finished first or second in five of his seven tournaments this season. He has six top-five finishes and eight top-10 finishes in his career.

Harlem hoops group coming to SHS
    The Harlem Ambassadors will visit Statesboro High School on Sunday, March 3, at 5:30 p.m., to take on a local team, the Hometown Heros, in an evening of basketball and entertainment.
    The event, sponsored by the Boys & Girls Club, offers halftime entertainment and prizes, including a chance at a $5,000 grand prize.
    Tickets are $8, and children under 4 get in free.

Wilcox shines at NFL Combine
    Georgia Southern’s J.J. Wilcox performed well as the defensive backs wrapped up the fourth and final day of the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine Tuesday in Indianapolis.             Wilcox recorded 17 reps in the 225-pound bench press, a 35 inch vertical and 10-foot, 4-inch broad jump during measurements and drills.
    A former GSU slotback who moved to safety for his senior season, Wilcox clocked in at slightly over seven seconds on the three-cone drill, but earned a star for a top performance in the 20-yard shuttle drill.
    His official 40-yard-dash time was listed as 4.57 seconds.
    Next up for Wilcox is Georgia Southern’s March 15 Pro Day at Paulson Stadium.

Screven splits with Effingham
    SYLVANIA — The Screven County Lady Gamecocks topped Effingham County, 4-1, Tuesday, while the boys fell in tennis action.
    Singles winners for the Lady Gamecocks (2-0) were Mallorie Boswell (6-3, 6-2), Jancy Durrence (6-3, 6-4).
    Doubles pairs of Pamela Wooten and Kari Lane (6-2, 6-1) and Haley Jackson and Laura Stuart (6-3, 2-6, 6-4) were also winners.
    Screven begins play in the Jekyll Jam Friday against Carrolton on Jekyll Island.
