Local Roundup: Claxton falls in semifinals

    HIAWASSEE — The Claxton Lady Tigers were seconds away from a trip to the Final Four.
    Towns County (26-4) scored at the buzzer, six seconds after Claxton (21-9) knocked the ball out of bounds, to win, 45-43, in the quarterfinals of the GHSA Class A public school playoffs.
    Jazmine Price was outstanding in Claxtons final game, scoring 28 points. Devonna Brewton dished out six assists and added eight points.
    Claxton trailed by as many as eight, but the game was knotted at the half, and the Tigers tied it one final time with 28 seconds to go in the fourth quarter.

Portal set to host state meet
    PORTAL — Portal High School will host Saturday's GACA state weight lifting championships for Class A and AA beginning at 10 a.m.
    Over 20 schools and more than 400 individuals will compete for both team and solo titles. Among the schools in attendance will be defending champions Claxton (Class A) and Thomasville (AA) along with defending runners-up Emanuel County Institute (A) and Heard County (AA).
    Lifts included in the competition will be the bench press, squat, and power clean.
    Admission to the competition is $2.
