Local Roundup: Blue Devils eliminated by ARC

    AUGUSTA — Richmond Academy exploded for 21 points in the fourth quarter and eliminated the Statesboro Blue Devils from the Region 3-AAAA tournament with a 66-58 win on Tuesday in Augusta.
    Statesboro was on a four-game winning streak heading into the tournament.
    The Blue Devils' season came to an end with an overall record of 19-7.
    O'Aaron Ware and Jaylen Rawles each scored 18 points for Statesboro.
    ARC trailed 31-30 at halftime, and SHS extended its lead to 49-44 after the third quarter before the Musketeers rallied.

Connelly hired as GSU OL coach
    Georgia Southern announced Tuesday the additionof assistant coach Bob Connelly to Willie Fritz's football staff. Connelly brings more than 15 years of experience as offensive line coach with a career that includes positions in Conference USA and the Southeastern, Pac-12, Western Athletic and Big 12 Conferences.
    Connelly most recently served as the associate head coach and offensive line coach at Arizona State, reconstructing in 2012 an offensive line in that had lost seven seniors from the season before. The Sun Devils went on to claim top 25 rankings in rushing and total offense while scoring 38.38 points per game, good for 14th nationally. Two of the three returning starters for Arizona State earned All-PAC 12 honors in 2013.

Purvis given SoCon honor
    Georgia Southern pitcher Sarah Purvis has been named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week for her work in the pitching circle in the Eagle Round Robin Tournament.
    Purvis earned her sixth career SoCon Pitcher of the Week honor.
    Purvis opened the weekend with an outstanding outing against the No. 1 ranked Tennessee Volunteers. She held the Vols to four hits and allowed one run in the loss. Purvis also struck out 10 batters as she posted double-digit strikeouts for the 14th time in her career.
    She recorded her first win of the weekend with a five-inning three-hitter against Northern Colorado in the final game of the weekend tournament. She allowed one run in the game and struck out six batters to close out the first weekend of the season.
    For the season, Purvis has a 1-1 overall record and a 1.17 ERA with 16 strikeouts.

Lady Gators win on the road
    MILLEDGEVILLE — The Bulloch Academy Lady Gators (26-1, 7-0 Region 4I-AAA) knocked off John Milledge Academy 44-32 on the road on Tuesday.
    Pate Lomax led BA with 11 points. Ashley Burke added 9 points and Mikay Sands added 8.
    Bulloch's game against Augusta Prep on Thursday is set to be played as scheduled at 6 p.m.

    The Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation
Department basketball playoffs are underway.
    In the Minor Boys Playoffs, the Lakers beat the Clippers 48-30, the Nets beat the Magic 46 to 36, the Trailblazers beat the Timberwolves 39-15, the Spurs beat the Knicks 42-30,  the Warriors beat the Rockets 33-18, the Celtics beat the Mavericks 36-10 and the Pacers beat the 76ers 27-10.
    In our Midget Boys Playoffs, the Warriors beat the Celtics 33-23 and the Bulls beat the Thunder 33-29.
