Local Roundup - BA gets belated win

A game that stretched over two days actually took less than an hour to play as Bulloch Academy run-ruled Frederica Academy 11-1 Wednesday at Gator Alley.

The GISA Region 2-AA contest began Tuesday afternoon but was halted in the bottom of the second inning due to lightning. When the lightning didn’t move out of the area, the game was suspended with Bulloch ahead 5-0. The contest picked up Wednesday at the exact spot where it was suspended.

But when the Knights made the long bus ride from St. Simons Island again, two players didn’t make the trip so the squad had to play with eight inside of nine.

Bulloch (7-6 overall and 6-3 in the region) took advantage of the unfortunate situation, scoring six runs in two innings for the win.

Junior pitcher Walker Blitch got the victory, giving up one unearned run on three hits and striking out four batters. Senior Brian Atkinson was 3-for-3 with three RBI while junior Davis Howell was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

On Tuesday, the Gators took a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

With one out, senior Taylor Burke blasted a solo home run over the right-field fence. Atkinson, junior Win Lee and sophomore Clayton Rogers all had singles. Blitch was hit by a pitch and Howell reached on an error.

Bulloch added another run in the second before play was halted.

Freshman Loy Waters and Burke drew walks and advanced on stole bases. Waters scored on Lee’sgroundout for the 5-0 lead.

On Wednesday, Frederica lit the scoreboard first when Zack Hicks doubled to left and scored when Taylor Spires reached on a BA error.

Bulloch scored four runs on four hits in the third for a 9-1 lead.

In the inning, Atkinson, Blitch and Howell all singled while freshman Bailey Smith tripled to left.

In the fourth, senior Matthew Sapp singled to center. Atkinson ripped a 1-0 pitch over the left-field fence for an 11-1 lead. Howell doubled to left but was left on base.

FA threatened in the top of the fifth when J. Henry Rowland singled to right in the top of the fifth. But, with two outs, BA catcher Sapp threw out the Knight as he tried to steal third to end the game.

Bulloch Academy hosts region rival Edmund Burke Academy Friday. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
