AUGUSTA — The Statesboro Blue Devils put up huge numbers on Wednesday in the opening day of the Region 3-AAAA meet at Cross Creek in Augusta.
The girls scored 59 points to take a commanding lead after the first day, and the boys trail Cross Creek by a point in second place.
At least one Blue Devil qualified for regionals in every event.
Rickey Lee won the region titlke in discus with a throw of 141-feet, 1-inch. Simone Kirkland broke an SHS record in the pole vault and won the region title with a jump of 8-feet, 6-inches. Genevieve Okafor won the long jump with a distance of 17-feet, 7-inches.
The region meet wraps up on Friday beginning at noon.
SCHS wins pair of region titles
The Screven County boys and girls tennis teams each won the Region 3-AA tennis title on Wednesday at Mill Creek.
The Lady Gamecocks (17-3) beat East Laurens and Dublin without dropping a set.
The boys (8-11) beat Dublin 3-1 and Westside 3-2.
Rebekah Woods, Mallorie Boswell, Jancy Durrence, and doubles pair Pamela Wooten/Haley Jackson were each 2-0 on the day.
Michaela Iwinski/Allie Bazemore and Kristin Thomas/Hannah Kumjian were each 1-0.
For the boys, Mason Oglesby, Zachary Weaver/James Woods, and Zachary Anderson/Bobby Hodges were each 2-0 in the tournament.
In the region championship freshman Mason Oglesby at No. 3 doubles won 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), and the Gamecocks all watched as Mason sealed the title.
Both teams will host the No. 4 seed pout of Region 1-AA in the first round og the Class AA state playoffs.
