Lanier joining Bobcats
Ariel Lanier, seated in center, signs a letter of intent to play for East Georgia College. Seated with Lanier are parents Brian and Pam. Standing (L-R) are Portal coaches Tendai Hagins and Shannon Davis, Skeebo Moore, Alley Lanier, Brittany Jersey and EGC coach Jordyn Nail.

The upstart softball team at East Georgia College added more local flavor as Portal’s Ariel Lanier signed with the Bobcats Thursday afternoon.

“Ariel is a very motivated individual,” said Portal coach Shannon Davis. “I’ve known her since sixth grade and know she’ll do great. She will do whatever she needs to do to be successful at any level.”

Signing on with a college seemed like a distant goal just a year ago.

Lanier missed sat out her entire season after tearing her ACL, but was able to bounce back strong this past fall.

“This is a very big day for me,” said Lanier. “I had been wanting to play college ball ever since I first started playing softball. The injury was rough, but I just kept working as soon as I was healthy and was able to have a good senior season.”

With such a serious injury standing in her path, it would have been easy to forget about playing at a higher level. In addition to her own determination, Lanier thanks her family and coaches for their support in helping her to get all the way back.
