Devils win state weightlifting title

The Statesboro High School Iron Devils Weightlifting Team won the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association State Weight Lifting Championship March 25 in a meet held in Hawkinsville.

The team's excellent performance won both the Class-AAAA state title and took home the overall state championship.

Shaq Johnson, Rod Murphy, Aaron Lester and Herman Lee placed first in their respective weight classes.

All four Blue Devils lifted well over 1,000 pounds total for their bench, squat and power clean lifts. Lee lifted a total of 1,295 lbs. and earned him the event’s Lee-Murray Award for most weight lifted by an individual.

The team is coached by Steve Pennington, Lee Hill and David NeSmith.
