Last season, Portal’s Stacey Morgan burst onto the scene as a freshman, lighting up scoreboards and leaving Panther fans to wonder what else he was capable of. Now, as a sophomore, Morgan is going above and beyond in leading Portal to its current 11-1 record.
Just before the new year, Morgan led all scorers as Portal won its own Holiday Classic tournament. With Region 3-A competition resuming in 2012, he hasn’t slowed down a bit. In the last week, Portal has defeated region foes Claxton, Treutlen and Jenkins County, with Morgan combining for 79 total points and scoring at least 20 points in all three games.
“I’m really feeling good right now,” Morgan said. “I got a lot of experience last year. I know that I can do better this season and that’s what I’m working hard for every game.”
Just four years removed from a state Final Four appearance, the Panthers are on a roll and look like early favorites to bring home a region title. Though a little banged up and still young, the sky is the limit for Morgan and company.
“I don’t think we have a limit,” Morgan said. “We just go and play our best every game. I think we can go far.”
