Athlete of the Week: Pennington back in style for Statesboro

Obviously, Reid Pennington was tired of sitting on the bench.
Forced to the sidelines for two weeks with an abdominal injury, Statesboro’s quarterback returned to the field last Friday and promptly turned in his best performance of the season in the Blue Devils’ 42-21 win over South Effingham.
“It was definitely good to get back out there,” said Pennington. “We’ve had a lot of injuries on both sides of the ball. Hopefully, I’ll get to feeling better and so will everyone else. We just need to keep it going.”
Although Statesboro usually makes its mark on the ground with its power rushing game, Pennington’s return saw him light up the Mustang defense through the air.
The Devils only threw four passes, but Pennington made the most of it. He connected with Tavist Wilson to keep a drive going on 3rd-and-12 and later hit Michael Summers for a 78 yard touchdown strike. In the second half, Pennington put the seal on another Statesboro win with a 56 yard touchdown pass to Dequan Daniels.
This week, Pennington and the Devils celebrate homecoming and have a chance to clinch at least a tie in the sub-region standings with a win over Evans.
