Athlete of the Week: Milestone for Claxton's Murray

Claxton High School basketball player Polly Murray

From the time she began her career at Claxton High School, Polly Murray has been a force to be reckoned with.
Last week, that sustained greatness paid off in the form of a milestone as Murray notched her 1,000th career point. Not content with simply scoring, Murray also is the leading rebounder for the Lady Tigers this season.
She has received all-region honors in the past, but Murray’s continued excellence, combined with this season’s seniority, has her in contention for a possible player of the year award.
“Polly is definitely a huge part of our team,” Claxton coach Laura Aziz said. “Not only is she a great player and a great scorer, but she makes everyone else on the team better when she’s on the floor.”
Murray’s accomplishments are gaudy enough in their own right, but they are even more impressive considering that she is coming off of a serious knee injury. Murray might not be 100 percent yet, but opponents are in no hurry to see her abilities improve any more.
“She’s easing back into things,” Aziz said. “The more comfortable she feels, the better she’ll get.”
