Athlete of the Week: Clark giving Portal a late run

Portal's junior catcher, Nolan Clark has five home runs and 16 RBIs in Portals last four games.

Portal is making a late run in Region 3-A play – thanks in large part to Nolan Clark.

The Panthers’ junior catcher has been a one-man wrecking crew over the past week.

In just four games, Clark has smashed five home runs and driven in 16 runs. The high point was an amazing power display at Jenkins County last week when Clark cleared the fences three times, knocking in nine runs in the process.

“I don’t know how to explain it,’ said Clark. “I’m just sitting back and driving the ball. I know I need to drive runs in from my spot in the lineup, so it’s good to come through for the team.”

During the span, the Panthers have picked up two crucial wins in the heart of region play. While Portal has struggled at times in non-region play, a season sweep of Jenkins County and Tuesday’s win over Emanuel County Institute – in which Clark had a home run and four RBIs – has the Panthers believing.

“ECI is second on their side of the region,” said Portal coach Tendai Hagins. “Wins like that give us a lot of confidence. Nolan has been swinging a hot bat to help us come around, so hopefully everyone else can get going as well.”
